Driving into Milan’s historic center means entering Area C, one of the city’s limited traffic zones (ZTL) designed to reduce congestion and pollution. To access this area by car, most drivers need to buy an Area C ticket - but the price can vary based on the type of vehicle and the reason for your visit.
Whether you're a daily commuter, a one-time visitor, or driving a service or rental vehicle, understanding the cost of Area C is essential to avoid fines and stay compliant with local regulations. Below, we break down exactly what you’ll need to pay to enter the zone.
Before you worry about how much Area C costs, it’s important to first check whether your vehicle is allowed to enter at all—and whether you might be exempt from paying. You can find this information in our guide to which vehicles can enter Area C and which are exempt from paying.
For most private vehicles, the Area C ticket costs €7.50 per day. This fee allows unlimited entries and exits on the same calendar day using the same vehicle, as long as the ticket is properly activated.
Keep in mind:
If you’re a resident inside Area C, you benefit from a special rule. The first 50 entries per year are free, provided you register your vehicle. From the 51st entry onward, you must pay a reduced cost of €3.00 per entry.
There are also lower rates available for certain categories of drivers:
NCC stands for Noleggio Con Conducente, or chauffeur-driven hire vehicles. These are commercial vehicles rented with a driver, often used for private transport, airport transfers, or tourism services.
In Area C, NCC vehicles with more than 9 seats are subject to fees that vary based on their length and purpose of use:
Special rates apply to NCC vehicles used exclusively for transporting students to and from school. These vehicles may be eligible for reduced fees starting from €7.50, depending on their size and whether the trip starts and ends within the same point in Area C.
If your vehicle qualifies as NCC and is used for school-related activities, check the official rules carefully before entering, as the fee can vary between €7.50, €22.50, €37.50, or €60 based on route and vehicle size.
If you drive into Area C without purchasing or activating a valid ticket by midnight on the day of entry, you are subject to a fine. However, the city of Milan allows drivers to fix the mistake by buying a deferred ticket, called the “titolo di ingresso posticipato” - to avoid receiving a full fine.
The deferred Area C ticket costs €22.50 and can be used after entering Area C if:
This option helps drivers who made a mistake but want to fix it before a fine is issued.
You have up to 7 days (including the day of entry) to purchase the deferred ticket. For example, if you entered Area C on a Monday, you must buy the €22.50 ticket by the following Sunday at 23:59.
You can purchase the deferred ticket:
Important: The €22.50 ticket must be activated once purchased.
If the ticket is not purchased and validated within the 7-day window, you risk receiving an official fine, which is much higher than the €22.50 deferred payment.
Now that you know how much Milan’s Area C costs, the next step is to purchase and validate your ticket correctly. Tickets can be bought online, at authorized retailers, or via SMS and mobile apps.
We’ve created a step-by-step guide to paying for Area C online that walks you through the process from start to finish.
Once you’ve purchased your ticket, don’t forget to validate it before entering the ZTL. Failing to do so means you could still receive a fine even if you’ve paid.
